Powerball Awards Match 5 Prize in California, Jackpot Nears the Mega Millions One

The Powerball jackpot is closing in on Mega Millions after yet another drawing passed without a jackpot winner. While no one matched all six numbers, the latest draw did produce a notable Match 5 winner in California.

California Player Lands Match 5 Prize Worth $185,595

The top prize for the September 2 Powerball drawing stood at $150 million, with a cash option of $65.2 million. To claim that life-changing sum, players needed to match all six winning numbers — and no one managed to do it.

The winning numbers drawn that night were 3, 10, 29, 58, and 64, with the red Powerball 14. The Power Play multiplier for the drawing was 2x.

One lucky player did come close, matching all five white numbers but missing the Powerball. In most states, that would have been a $1 million prize. However, because the ticket was sold in California, the payout was $185,595. That’s because California awards prizes based on ticket sales and the number of winners.

According to the California Lottery, the September 2 drawing produced 45,907 winning Powerball tickets in total.

Several Players Win Big in Lower Tiers

Eight other players across the country matched four white numbers plus the Powerball, securing the game’s third-tier prize. Five of those ticket holders will take home $50,000 each, while the remaining three will receive $100,000 apiece because their tickets included the Power Play option.

Powerball Jackpot Grows to $173 Million

With the jackpot still unclaimed, the prize has continued to climb. The estimated jackpot for the Saturday drawing is now $173 million, with a lump-sum cash option of approximately $75 million.

That means Powerball has nearly caught up to the current Mega Millions jackpot. If neither game produces a jackpot winner in the next drawing, Powerball’s top prize could easily surpass Mega Millions’ headline number.

Other Notable Powerball Winners

In other lottery news, the first Match 5 prize in the United Kingdom was awarded after a British player matched all five white numbers in the August 31 drawing. That ticket earned a $1 million payout. A player in New York also matched the same feat and took home a similar prize.

The most recent Saturday Powerball drawing also produced two Match 5 winners, with tickets sold in California and Georgia.
